Simulations have been used in business schools since the 1950s, and the research literature on them is large but uneven. This page summarizes the strongest evidence we could find, favoring meta-analyses and systematic reviews over single-classroom studies, and it includes the findings that cut the other way. The most-cited quantitative evidence is Sitzmann's meta-analysis in Personnel Psychology, which pooled 65 studies with 6,476 participants comparing simulation-game instruction against other methods.[1] Relative to comparison groups, trainees taught with simulation games showed:
Two details in that paper matter as much as the headline. First, the advantage appeared when the simulation conveyed material actively rather than passively: learners who made decisions and saw consequences outperformed learners who watched. Second, Sitzmann reports evidence of publication bias in the underlying literature, meaning the true effects are probably smaller than the pooled numbers. We cite the caveat because it is real, and because the direction of the finding survives it.
Vlachopoulos and Makri reviewed 123 studies of games and simulations in higher education and concluded that they show a positive impact across three families of outcomes: cognitive (knowledge and conceptual understanding), behavioural (skills such as decision making and teamwork), and affective (engagement and motivation).[2] The review is open access, so the full text is one click away.
More recently, Faisal and colleagues ran a PRISMA-guided systematic review of 57 empirical studies of business simulation games published between 2015 and 2022. Their conclusion: business simulation games improve knowledge acquisition, cognitive and interactive skills, and engagement, and the methodological quality of the underlying studies has been rising.[3]
The case method is the traditional benchmark in business education, so the comparison studies are worth reading. Farashahi and Tajeddin surveyed 194 undergraduate and MBA students who had experienced lectures, case studies, and simulations in comparable settings. Students rated simulations the most effective of the three methods for developing problem-solving skills, interpersonal skills, and self-awareness, with case studies second and lectures third.[4] That is perception data rather than exam data, a distinction we return to below.
Earlier work points the same direction on harder measures: Wolfe's review of the strategic management course literature found computer-based business games produced learning outcomes superior to case-based teaching in the studies that measured both.[5]
Zooming out from business education, the largest study of active learning in general is Freeman and colleagues' meta-analysis of 225 studies in PNAS: average exam performance rose about half a standard deviation under active learning, and students in traditional lecture courses were 1.5 times more likely to fail.[6] A well-run simulation course is one implementation of active learning, arguably the most literal one available to a business school.
The engagement findings go deeper than "students like games." Buil, Catalán and Martínez studied business simulation participants through the lens of self-determination theory and found the simulations fostered intrinsic motivation by meeting three documented psychological needs: competence (visible progress against a real scoreboard), autonomy (decisions that are genuinely yours), and relatedness (working in a team against other teams).[7] Those are design properties, which means a simulation can get them right or wrong. A black-box economy undermines competence; a scripted, on-rails scenario undermines autonomy.
Anderson and Lawton's much-cited review in Simulation & Gaming is the field's own self-critique: decades of research established that students and instructors perceive strong learning from simulations, while objective measurement of cognitive learning lagged behind.[8] The gap has narrowed since (the meta-analytic and review evidence above is largely post-2009), but any instructor evaluating vendors should still ask how a simulation supports real assessment rather than assuming participation equals learning.
A related, newer problem: assessment integrity. Kofinas, Tsay and Pike found in a 2025 British Journal of Educational Technology study that authentic assessment alone does not safeguard academic integrity in a generative-AI environment, and that markers struggle to detect AI-assisted work reliably.[9] Simulations are usually filed under authentic assessment, so this finding applies to them too: a simulation only anchors honest assessment if its grading is structurally resistant to shared answers, not merely "hands-on."
